Sri Lanka APMBC article 5 completion scenario planning workshop, June 2024

On June 17, 2024, GICHD and NMAC, in collaboration with mine action operators, organized a workshop to plan for Article 5 completion, exploring various scenarios based on funding situations, gaps, and contamination levels.

In 2023 and 2024, the discovery of previously unknown contaminated areas increased Sri Lanka’s mine contamination baseline, impacting the timeline for completing APMBC Article 5 obligations. To address this, a workshop was organized to explore three scenarios: increased funding, sustained funding, and decreased funding, taking into account both funding levels and remaining contamination. This workshop aimed to foster a transparent, evidence-based dialogue with the Government of Sri Lanka and international donors, with outcomes informing a resource mobilization strategy.
