International mine awareness day in Kilinochchi
To commemorate International Mine Awareness Day, the National Mine Action Center (NMAC) along with MAG, HALO, DASH, SHARP and the Sri Lanka Army Humanitarian Demining Unit participated in a friendly cricket match in Kilinochchi public ground on the 6th of April.
This day is dedicated to raising awareness about landmines and the efforts towards their eradication. The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, Hon. Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga, and the Minister of Fisheries, Hon. Mr. Douglas Devananda. Delegates from other organizations, the Governor of the Northern Province, P.S.M. Charles, and senior government representatives graced the event to support the civilians and the staff of mine action organizations.
On the 06th of April, parallel to the event, the mine action operators conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions in Kilinochchi town to create awareness about the dangers of war remnants and the best practices when one accidentally encounters unknown objects.
